One thing I've learned in PhD Program

One thing I've learned in academia is to stay away from anything volunteer-based or state-controlled.

  1. One thing I've learned during my PhD: stay well clear of the politics that go on in your department.

  2. Well, I couldn't avoid the politics. So I guess I've learned quite a bit about it. More specifically, I've learned that there's no right or wrong - it's all about who has more power.

  3. Yep, you've got it in one. Ultimately that is what it boils down to. My supervisor was head of department, so you can imagine the nightmare I had when I had problems with the way he was handling me. There was nowhere to turn, because he was at the very top!

  4. Hi, Alex. Thanks much for the articles you've posted on this blog. I started my Phd career about two months ago and think about quitting it now. Since the first months, I've been keeping on receiving warning/notification emails from my advisor, such as "zero contribution to the lab", "no potential", "very disappointed" and etc. Really stressful.
