Fear of Failing Comprehensive Exams

Many PhD students have a fear of failing comprehensive exams. I think this fear largely has to do with the fact that most PhD students have never failed an exam in their entire life. In fact, there are many students who have never gotten anything below B+ on an exam.

Now hear me loud and clear! Failing comprehensive exams can turn out to be the luckiest thing that has ever happened to you. If you fail comps, you will probably spend a few months grieving and trying to figure out why this happened. Then you will find a job and move on. Trust me, you will live a much better life than 80% of those who pass comprehensive exams. So if you fail your comps, go to mosque and praise Allah!

  2. LOL

Whoever spends 1,000,000 getting a PhD deserves what they get.

If you can't get someone to pay you to get a degree, you're doing it wrong.

And anyone who gets a PHD in mid-evil lit... Hopefully they didn't do it for the money.

  3. guess what genius... he isn't talking about spending money for the actual degree necessarily, he is also talking about lost money in opportunity cost and investment. I hope you didn't get a PhD yourself, because clearly if you are this dumb still your education was worthless

  4. Must have failed and now is trying to find an excuse why that's okay.
It's not okay. After four years in a BA, two years in an MA, and two years in a Ph.D., there is absolutely no reason to fail the comps.
